Household Hazardous Waste:
Newburyport will be holding its Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day on August 15th, 2026 this year. It will be held at the Department of Public Serives at 16A Perry Way from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. Other town’s HHW dates are posted and include towns that accept Newburyport residents. Please see the regional hazardous waste events attached at the bottom of this page for those options. See list (PDF) below of acceptable items.
The following materials will not be accepted as hazardous waste on collection days:
- Explosives or any ordnance
- Medical waste (biomedical and pharmaceutical)
- PCBs
- Radioactive material (including smoke detectors)
- Materials with no hazardous constituents
- Latex paint** (must be dried out and put into the regular trash with tops off)

Prescription Drug and Medication Drop Off
Nearly one in five teens report abusing prescription medications that were not prescribed to them. Help protect young people by removing medications from your home.

Accepted Meds: Prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medication, i.e. tablets and capsules are accepted.
Not Accepted: Liquids that are not intravenous or injectable can go into your trash.

Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines are not part of this initiative.
