Clean Energy Roadmap

Building on our track record of robust community engagement, Newburyport stakeholders developed a long-term vision.

The Clean Energy Roadmap, published in June 2014, identified strategies to create a roadmap to become a zero net energy community by 2050.

The primary objectives were to significantly reduce energy use in governmental, residential, and commercial building and transportation sectors through energy efficiency and energy conservation measures, as well as provide all energy needs from renewable energy sources. To the extent possible, the City would generate renewable energy from local projects.

The Clean Energy Roadmap was a pilot initiative of the MassCEC in collaboration with the DOER Green Communities Division.

Clean Energy Roadmap Goals

  • Become a zero net energy community by 2050
  • Support local development of renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • Provide economic benefits to users by pursuing the most cost-effective projects first
  • Encourage regional collaboration and resource sharing
  • Support and protect Newburyport’s historical and local resources
  • Provide ancillary sustainability benefits where possible to reduce waste, increase local food production and improve water management
