Hard to Dispose of Items & Where to Bring Them

The Colby Farm Lane Recycling Center is open Mondays and Thursdays from 12:15 PM - 2:15 PM and the first Saturday of every month from 8 AM - 12 PM (noon). Call for further clarification in the event of inclement weather or holidays.
Appliances – Bring to Colby Farm Lane (formerly Crow Lane) Recycling Center. Fees apply. You may also bring them to Nichol’s Scrap Metal in Amesbury at 978-388-9639 or Salisbury Auto Salvage at 978-595-2277. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Air Conditioners, Refrigerators, De-humidifiers – All contain Freon. Please bring to Recycling Center. Fees apply. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Asphalt, Brick, Concrete, Clean Fill – Miles River (978-356-2290).
Batteries –
Rechargeable: must not go in the trash. Drop off at Staples, Lowes, Home Depot, Recycle Center or the Newburyport Sustainability Office (located in the basement of City Hall). These are primarily LiIon, NiCad, NiMH.
Button Cell – may go in the trash if manufactured after 2017. Drop at Home Depot, Recycle Center or City Hall.
Single-Use – may go in the trash. However, if you’d like to get them recycled, drop at Staples for free, or at the Recycle Center for a donation of 0.89 cents/pound. (These say Alkaline or Heavy Duty.)
Lead Acid – must not go in the trash. Drop off at a scrap metal yard or at the Recycle Center.
Books – Donate to Newburyport Public Library for book sales at 978-465-4428 or go to local used book store like Jabberwocky Bookshop in Newburyport. You may also drop them off in the book drop-off bins located in the Bresnahan School driveway, off North Atkinson Street. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Cardboard – Large amounts to Recycling Center, flattened and clean or bundle small amount to put out for curbside recycling.
Carpets and rugs – Purchase $15 bulk sticker; good for one room's worth. Your sticker will be mailed to you once purchased in 3-5 days OR you can purchase a bulk sticker in person at Shaw's and Market Basket at the customer service windows, or Richdale, Black Duck, or 7-Eleven from the cashier (Richdale and Black Duck only accepts cash). Only one bulk item per week. Roll/fold to 4 feet wide or cut into square sections. Put out on regular trash day with sticker affixed.
Cell Phones – Bring to Recycling Center or Sustainability Office in the lower level of City Hall. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Computers and Laptops – Bring to the Recycling Center. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Confidential Material – Bring to shredding day which takes place on Household Hazardous Waste Day.
Construction Material – Not accepted at the curb. Contact G. Mello Disposal at 978-352-8581.
Fire extinguishers – Small fire extinguishers are $8 and large are $13.
Fluorescent Light Bulbs – Bring to Recycling Center.
Furniture (non-metal) and Rugs – Purchase $15 bulk sticker; one bulk item per week. Your sticker will arrive in 3-5 days in the mail. Put out on trash day with sticker affixed. No large wood objects like picnic tables unless broken down. You can also purchase bulk stickers at Richdale's, Black Duck, or 7-Eleven from the cashier, or from Market Basket and Shaw's at the customer service desks. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Gas Grills – Remove propane tank, briquettes, rocks, and igniter batteries. Bring grill to Recycling Center. You may also bring them to Nichol’s Scrap Metal in Amesbury (978-388-9638) or Salisbury Auto Salvage at 978-595-2277.
Gasoline – Bring to Household Hazardous Waste Day.
Gutters – Bring aluminum gutters to Recycling Center or Nichol’s Scrap Metal at 978-388-9639 or Salisbury Auto Salvage at 978-595-2277. Bring wooden gutters to Mello Disposal at 978-352-8581.
Helium Tanks – Bring to Recycling Center, fee $3. If you follow the steps to prove it’s been emptied, we’ll waive the fee!
Ink Jet Cartridges – Bring to Recycling Center or Sustainability Office in the lower level of City Hall.
Latex Paints – Remove lids, dry out paint, put lidless next to trash barrel. Use kitty litter for fast drying.
Lumber – Contact G. Mello Disposal; 978-352-8581.
Mattress and Box Spring – Call 978-499-0413 to sign up for monthly curbside pick-up or bring to the Recycling Center. $30 per piece.
Mercury Thermometers – Bring to Recycling Center or City Hall Sustainability Office.
Metal Goods – Appliances, bikes, water heaters, mowers, grills, etc. bring to Recycling Center or Nichol’s Scrap Metal at 978-388-9639 or Salisbury Auto Salvage at 978-595-2277.
Microwaves – Bring to Recycling Center. Fee applies. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Needles/Sharps – Needles, syringes and lancets may not be thrown in the trash or recycling bins. They must be placed in a rigid, puncture resistant, sealed, leak proof container and brought to the sharps collection kiosk in City Hall across from the Recycling Department.
Paint –
Water-based: (if clean-up instructions say “soap and water”); remove lids, dry out until rock-hard, put lidless next to trash barrel. Use kitty litter for fast drying.
Oil-based: (if clean-up instructions say “mineral spirits or turpentine”); bring to Household Hazardous Waste Day. Fees apply.
Plastic Bags - Bring to grocery store containers in front of store. Do not put in curbside recycling cart.
Prescription Drugs and Medication – Bring any unused or old prescription medications to CVS on Pond Street whenever CVS is open. The container is in the back of the store. For more information, please see Prescription Drug and Medication Drop Off.
Propane Tanks – We unfortunately cannot accept any propane tanks at this time. We recommend calling Kelly's Ace Hardware at (978) 462-2951 for any questions.
Recyclables – Large quantities of recyclable containers and newspapers may be brought to G. Mello Disposal; 978-352-8581.
Solvents, Chemicals, Pesticides, etc – Bring to Household Hazardous Waste Day.
Styrofoam peanuts – Bring clean and bagged to Ship N Print, 25 Storey Avenue, Newburyport.
Textiles – Leave clothing, shoes, blankets, stuffed animals, etc. in white recycling bins at Nock Middle School on Low Street, Bresnanhan School on N. Atkinson or at Yard Waste Facility or Recycling Center off Colby Farm Lane (formerly Crow Lane). If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Tires – Bring to Recycling Center. Fee is $3.
TV's and Screens- Bring to Colby Farm Lane (formerly Crow Lane) Recycling Center. Fees apply. If in good condition, you may also consider donating.
Used Motor Oil – Bring to Recycling Center. No Fee.
Windows – G. Mello Disposal; 978-352-8581.
Wooden Items – Bring to G. Mello Transfer Station. Large furniture items not accepted at the curb unless broken down.
