BC/BS Health Insurance GLP 1 Change in Coverage

Beginning on July 1, 2026, our Blue Cross Blue Shield plan will no longer be covering GLP 1 medications for weight loss.  These medications include Saxenda (liraglutide injection), Wegovy, and Zepbound.  These medications are also excluded from coverage for sleep apnea or heart disease.

There is no change to coverage to treat type 2 diabetes and will continue to require prior authorization, including a documented diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.  These medications include Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity, and others, which aren’t approved for weight loss. 

Please note, these medications will still be flexible spending account (FSA) eligible.

Due to the high cost of these medications and the avoidance of deep increases in premiums across the board, this will no longer be a cost the City of Newburyport nor its employees can absorb as municipalities are seeing health insurance increases of 10-20% across the board.

If you utilize these medications for weight loss, please review your options with your doctor.
