Be Sure To Protect Your Home During the Winter:
The protection of the water meter and water services from damage and/or freezing is the homeowner's responsibility.
If your home is used as a seasonal home, during the winter months it is critical that the meter be left in a heated location to prevent freezing.
Should the water meter and/or water service freeze, the homeowner is responsible for paying for replacement of the water meter and other damaged frozen equipment and piping. All water that passes through a broken pipe or water meter will be billed to the homeowner. All charges are the responsibility of the homeowner.
Seasonal Service Offered:
Please be aware that the Newburyport Water Department offers what we call a "seasonal" service to ensure that the water meter and service do not freeze during the cold winter months. If you will be away from the property for an extended time, we recommend that this seasonal service be performed.
The cost for this service is $75.00 per visit. This charge is added to your regular water bill.
Requirements
Customers may schedule their own appointment by clicking here. The Water Department requires a minimum ten (10) days' notice for all seasonal work. This will ensure that staff has ample time to verify the appointment as well as perform the shut off/on service in an efficient manner.
The appointment will take approximately 45 minutes and someone will need to be at the property to meet the technician.
The Water Department will shut the water off at the street and winterize and cap the meter.
In the Spring, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to again schedule their appointment to turn their service back on.
If as a seasonal customer, you wish to keep water on for the winter season, as courtesy please notify the Newburyport Water Department so that account status may be changed.
Final Read Service:
The Business Office requires that customers submit their Final Read Request at least seven days prior to the date of the closing. This will ensure that staff has ample time to both schedule and perform the final read prior to the closing.
Transfer/Sale of Property: Prior to the sale of property (residential/commercial) a final water & sewer bill is required. Realtor's and closing attorney's can schedule an appointment for a final meter reading by accessing the link above. Final meter read requests must be submitted at least seven days prior to the date of closing. Once you complete your online scheduling, a confirmation email will be sent to you. Additionally, you can sign up to receive text/email reminders as the date approaches.
Please Note: Someone must be available to let the Water Technician into the dwelling to gather information for the final bill. Final bills are e-mailed to the closing attorney. The City of Newburyport is not responsible for unpaid Water and Sewer bills generated by property transfers that occurred and whom failed to request a final Water and Sewer bill.
