Newburyport Announces “Pop the Capsule” Party for 175th Anniversary
NEWBURYPORT, MA – Mayor Sean Reardon and Newburyport Recreation & Youth Services invite the community to celebrate the City’s 175th anniversary at the “Pop the Capsule” Party on June 24 from 6:00–8:00 PM at Brown Square outside City Hall.
The highlight of the evening will be the opening of a 50-year-old time capsule at 7:15 PM, originally sealed in 1976 during Newburyport’s 125th anniversary under Mayor Byron Matthews. The capsule contains items and reflections from that time, offering a unique look into the city’s past.
The celebration will include:
- Live music from a 70s-themed band
- Games and activities for children
- Opportunities to explore local history
- A festive, family-friendly atmosphere
As part of the celebration, the City is also hosting an essay contest, inviting young people to reflect on Newburyport today and what they hope future generations will experience. Selected essays may be recognized as part of the event. Rules and Information are attached.
“This is a special opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate our history and our future,” said Mayor Sean Reardon.
The event is free and open to the public.
