A Message from the City's Water Division
Some residents have recently noticed changes in the taste, odor, and color of their water. These issues are related to natural conditions in the reservoirs, particularly during periods of ice cover and seasonal turnover. During these times, naturally occurring compounds in the water can become more noticeable. While the taste and smell may be unpleasant, these changes are strictly aesthetic and do not pose any health risk.
The only effective method for removing this type of taste and odor is Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration. Our current treatment facility does not include GAC; however, the proposed new treatment plant will have GAC fully integrated into its filtration system.
We are also currently experiencing high manganese levels in the reservoir. Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral, and while elevated levels can affect water color and appearance, the Water Division continues to ensure that all water leaving the treatment plant meets all state and federal drinking water standards.
The Water Treatment Plant is staffed 24 hours a day. Levels are being checked hourly and we are working with our contract engineering firms to adjust treatment as needed within the parameters of the current treatment plant and regulatory standards.
The City’s Water Division remains committed to closely monitoring water quality and providing safe drinking water to all residents.
