Parking Garage Construction Update

June 8, 2018

Attention:

During the week of June 3, 2018, the existence of a small area of asbestos lined pipe and materials/soils were discovered during excavation work for footings for the MVRTA Intermodal Parking Facility. These pipes/materials were at one point part of an old structure which existed on the site prior to the parking lot which was removed. Since this discovery, the City has been in contact with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and immediately dispatched an Environmental Management team to contain the contaminants and assist the City in formulating a plan for clean up. In order to clean up and contain this material as soon as possible, the consulting team will be mobilizing efforts today (6/8/2018). As part of the plan for clean up and containment, which includes a host of steps required by-law, perimeter warning flags will be installed around the site to inform the Public of the existence of contaminants.

Currently, the site crews are working to install footings for the building in portions of the site which are outside the area of contamination. Concrete placement & formwork, as well as rebar installations and excavation work will continue over the next several weeks with pre-cast elements forthcoming over the next two months.
