Route 1 Rotary Closed to Northbound Traffic 11/3-11/6

MassDOT Detour of Rotary

The City of Newburyport is sharing an update on MassDOT’s construction work on the Route 1 Traffic Circle. The project is proceeding on schedule and the construction team will need one full weekend to complete the reconfiguration of the northbound section of the Traffic Circle. The Rotary will be closed to northbound traffic the weekend of November 3rd, with the closure beginning Friday, November 3rd at 7:00pm and going through 5am on Monday, November 6th. Traffic will be detoured down State Street to Route 1 via Greenleaf and Pond Streets. Police details will be stationed along the route to guide traffic.

Area businesses, including Pomodori, will still be accessible while this work is taking place. Additional signage will be placed to direct people through the Traffic Circle and instructing drivers on how to access the businesses.

The majority of construction work is expected to be completed in November, with follow-up work, including repaving, installation of the HAWK Pedestrian signals, and landscaping scheduled for completion by spring/summer 2024.

Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT’s Resident Engineer, Carmen Illardi, at (617) 866-8760 or carmen.ilardi@state.ma.us.
