Mayor Reardon and the Newburyport Emergency Management Team are advising residents that there will be extremely cold weather arriving this weekend due to an arctic front moving through the area. Wind chills will be as low as -20 to -40 degrees on Friday night, with frigid temperatures lasting all day Saturday before rebounding into the 40s on Sunday and Monday.

The Salvation Army Newburyport, located at 40 Water Street, will be open as an emergency warming shelter. They will be open from 9am on Friday through Saturday at 7pm, when the frigid temperatures are expected to rise. They will plan to stay open longer on Saturday should the cold weather remain. For more information call 978-465-0883.

PITA Hall at 8 Plum Island Boulevard, Newbury, will also be open continuously as a warming center throughout the cold weather period.

The Newburyport Public Library will be open from 9am to 5pm on both Friday and Saturday, offering an additional warm place to spend time during the day.

The City's Recycling Center on Colby Farm Lane will be closed on Saturday, February 4th, due to the projected frigid temperatures. It will be open Monday, 2/6, as regularly scheduled.

The City will announce if any other services will be made available based on the forecasts and emerging weather issues. Please remember to check on your neighbors, the elderly, and those in need. You can call the Fire Department non-emergency line with any issues during the cold weather period at 978-465-4427.
