The FDA is Investigating Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Likely Linked to Romaine Lettuce and Salmonella outbreak linked to poultry and turkey.  Currently, the FDA does not have enough traceback information, on both recalls to identify the source of the contamination that would allow a targeted recall from specific suppliers.
 
What Do Consumers Need To Do?
 
Turkey and Poultry:  The FDA does not advise to consumers to avoid turkey and poultry.  Proper food handling n measures should be used:
  • Wash hands often especially when handling raw poultry and ready to eat foods
  • Wash and sanitize preparation tables and cutting boards
  • Do not rinse turkey and poultry with water as this may spread bacteria
  • Cook turkey and poultry to a minimum of 165 F
Romaine:  The FDA advises that consumers should not eat and discard romaine, or any mixed salads containing romaine, until more information on the source of the contamination and the status of the outbreak can be determined. 
 
Consumers should always practice safe food handling and preparation measures. It is recommended that they wash hands, utensils, and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling food.
