City Celebrating Juneteenth with June 16th Ceremony

Juneteenth Flag Raising on June 16th at 5pm at City Hall

Join the City of Newburyport for its Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 16th at 5pm at City Hall! We will be raising the Juneteenth flag and holding a ceremony that includes a speaking program and singing of the Black National Anthem. There will also be music and food, and we look forward to celebrating with the whole community. We are grateful to the City’s DEI Alliance for organizing this event.

City Hall will be closed Monday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It is the longest running African-American holiday and has been called America’s second independence day.

There will be a number of events across the city for Juneteenth, and area businesses will be displaying Juneteenth flags in their storefront windows. In addition to the City’s Flag Raising, you can check out the following events in Newburyport:

Corey Harris Concert
Saturday, June 17th, 8:00pm
Belleville Meeting House, 300 High Street
This Belleville Roots concert features blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Corey Harris.

WJOP, 96.3FM Joppa Radio Juneteenth Celebration
June 17th - 18th, 6am-6am
Joppa Radio will present a marathon of works by Black musicians and writers throughout the day.

YWCA of Greater Newburyport Juneteenth Celebration
June 19th, 1-5pm, 13 Market Street
The YWCA will host an ice cream social at 1pm, a show by competitive Double Dutch team The Rope Burners, and open swim from 3-5pm.

When Houston Had the Blues
June 18th, 7pm
The Screening Room, 82 State Street
The Screening Room will present this documentary on the Black music scene in Houston and follow it up with an interview with director Alan Swyer.
