New Northern Terminus to Open for Bay Circuit Trail

New access point in Newburyport is part of a broader initiative to increase accessibility on the trail

The City of Newburyport is happy to announce that the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), in partnership with the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), has created a new accessible Northern Terminus on the Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway that will give more area residents the opportunity to enjoy one of the region’s most popular outdoor recreation resources.

The terminus, which is part of a larger “accessible trails hub,” is located outside the NWR visitor center and includes an interpretative panel, an accessible picnic table, and bike rack. The project is part of a broader initiative to increase accessibility along the 230-mile trail and to make it more welcoming to people of all abilities. Other improvements include interpretive panels, braille signage and shaded seating areas.

A ribbon cutting will take place on Thursday, June 2, at 12:30 PM at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 6 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA. A group hike at 1:30 pm will follow. The event is open to all. Confirmed speakers include: Newburyport Mayor Sean Reardon, Newburyport City Councilor Jennie Donahue, AMC Interim President and CEO Susan Arnold, and NWR Manager Matt Hillman.

The Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway is a 230-mile trail that stretches from Plum Island in Newburyport to Duxbury/Kingston Bay. The trail is close to 4 million people in Eastern Massachusetts and many sections are accessible by public transportation. AMC works with local communities in establishing their portions of the Bay Circuit Trail through planning and technical assistance, route identification, land protection, trail management, and construction.
