City of Newburyport to Dedicate Covid-19 Memorial Ceremony

The City of Newburyport will hold a ceremony to dedicate a Covid-19 Pandemic Memorial Sculpture on Saturday, Dec 2, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the site of the newly installed granite memorial located on the shoreline of the Clipper City Rail Trail, just east of the American Yacht Club.

The public is invited to attend this memorial event. Speakers will include Mayor Sean Reardon, Anna Jaques Hospital President Glenn Focht, sculptor Michael Updike, and Senior Project Manager Geordie Vining.

In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled to Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at 1 p.m.

The City expresses its sincere gratitude to everyone involved in the planning, design, and support of this significant memorial. A special acknowledgment goes to artist, designer, and sculptor Michael Updike for his invaluable contribution to the project.

The granite memorial, a testament to the unity and resilience of the community during the challenging times of the pandemic, stands as a tribute to the lives lost and the collective strength demonstrated in overcoming adversity.

Attendees are encouraged to use the designated parking lots for the event. Tom McGee of Klone Lab has generously permitted the use of the parking lot at 115A Water St. Additionally, attendees can utilize the adjacent DPS parking on the gravel lot and the paved parking across from the OCL building, about 100 yards away from the memorial site.

The City extends an open invitation to all community members to join together in remembrance and reflection at this ceremony.
