Plum Island - Fiscal Implications & Discussing Next Steps

  • What should Newbury and Newburyport be aware of related to Plum Island and sea level rise?
  • What do current sea level rise predictions show when matched to the island, and what might some of the fiscal impacts be for the towns?

Please join us in (virtually) attending these meetings which may help community-wide understanding of how Plum Island will be impacted by sea level rise and what questions we need to consider for future planning on the island by both communities.

This study, and the associated public meetings, were initiated by the Town of Newbury which was awarded an Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant for this work. The project consultants will be hosting a two-part series of meetings to share this work and facilitate discussion about where we (the Plum Island communities) go from here:

The goal of this project is to develop new information and insights to support informed discussion, planning and decision-making, and to assist with future evaluation of actions, policies and funding needs. Sea levels are rising, flooding is worsening, and storms are getting stronger and more damaging. Join us to learn more about what this could mean for the fiscal and economic future of Plum Island, Newbury and Newburyport.

Two-Part Series of Meetings:

  • Part 1 will focus on understanding the projected sea level rise and flood impacts on Plum Island that form the basis for the analysis.
  • Part 2 will present the results of the analysis and solicit public input on next steps.
