The Onward, Forward! City of Newburyport Public Service Award
This award will be given annually at the “State of the City” event and will honor a city employee, board and commission volunteer, or elected official who has:
- Gone above and beyond the call of duty for the City of Newburyport
- Made a profound difference in improving public services
- Taken risks in order to achieve change
- Fostered a more democratic society
- Served as a champion of social equity
The Mayor will ask for nominations from residents, city employees, and any other Newburyport community members for public servants who best fit the values of the award as stated above. The recipient will be chosen by a selection committee formed by the Mayor.
Mayor’s Community Service Award (3 Categories, 3 Finalists each, 3 Winners)
- Individual Community Service Award – This award is given to an individual whose volunteer efforts have touched the lives of others and brightened our city. This award seeks to recognize individuals for the longevity of their work, the impact it has had on the city, and the additional giving it has inspired in others. This could go to those who have worked on issues of housing and food insecurity, those who have served as mentors, coaches, or leaders for youth sports or activities, those who have organized important volunteer initiatives, or others.
- Business Award – This award is intended to recognize local businesses, who have, on a regular basis, supported community events, groups or activities. Our community is lucky to have a number of engaged and supportive businesses, and this gives us a chance to honor their generosity and commitment to the city.
- Youth Community Service Award – This award is intended to recognize the positive contributions of a young (under 18) member of the community who has altruistically pursued efforts to improve the world.
The business award is open to all business located in the city, and the other community service awards will be given to Newburyport residents. Because of the number of people we expect to be excellent candidates for these awards, we will announce two finalists alongside the winner for the Youth and Individual Community Service Awards. To nominate an individual, business, or youth community service award candidate, please submit the nomination form to the Mayor's Office or complete the online nomination form no later than January 5th at 5pm. The winners will be chosen by a Selection Committee convened by the Mayor.
