*UPDATE: Plummer Springs Road Bridge / Roadway Closure Notification

The City of Newburyport in conjunction with the Town of West Newbury has decided to close the Plummer Springs Bridge on Wednesday, May 23, 2018. At this time the bridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic indefinitely. Access for pedestrians and bicyclists will be maintained at this time.

This important public safety decision was made as a result of multiple MassDOT bridge condition reports which found the integrity of the bridge to be structurally sound, but the surface and exterior to be failing at an accelerated rate. Continued monitoring from the Newburyport D.P.S. over the past several months found that this surface and exterior deterioration will eventually cause structural failure in the near future if not repaired. The bridge also traverses the Lower Artichoke Reservoir which serves as the main water supply to Newburyport and West Newbury. 

An alternate detour route will be posted that will direct traffic to Storey Avenue / Route 113 in Newburyport. Any questions or concerns, please contact the City of Newburyport, Department of Public Services at 978-465-4463, extension 1701.
