The Conservation Commission is an official agency, with seven members appointed to three year terms by the Mayor, and specifically charged with the protection of the City’s natural resources.  The Commission also advises other municipal officials and boards on conservation issues that relate to their areas of responsibility.  The primary function of the Conservation Commission is to review project applications and make determinations pursuant to the Wetlands Protection Act (M.G.L. Ch 131 sec. 40) and the local Newburyport Wetlands Ordinance. Projects range in size from small additions located near wetlands or water bodies to large developments that may impact wetland resources.
