Newburyport Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Listening Session

Join us Wednesday, May 18th at 3pm

The City of Newburyport invites the public to participate in a listening session about the City’s efforts with respect to Hazard Mitigation Planning, which will take place on Wednesday, May 18th at 3pm.

Background: Disasters can cause loss of life, damage buildings and infrastructure, and lead to devastating consequences for a community’s economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Hazard mitigation reduces loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Having a hazard mitigation plan increases awareness of hazards, risks and vulnerabilities; identifies actions for risk reduction; and focuses local resources on the greatest risks while communicating priorities to state and federal officials.

Developing plans to mitigate current and future hazards is an investment in Newburyport’s safety and sustainability. Planning helps the City to act before a disaster, to reduce losses when a disaster occurs. The planning process helps the community think through how to prepare, design, and develop while building partnerships for risk reduction. Hazard Mitigation plans are also a prerequisite for certain kinds of non-emergency disaster assistance including those funded by the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program (BRIC).

Newburyport engaged local and regional stakeholders to assist in plan development and worked with the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission to draft the plan. The public is invited to participate in this listening session to learn more about the findings from the planning process and to provide input on the draft. In order to attend the meeting, you must pre-register at the following zoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hJgDQwoPSLueqaBOxJFeWQ You will be sent a confirmation email with a link to a Zoom meeting, which will be accessible on May 18th at 3pm.
