Holiday Trash Collection Reminders

There is no delay for trash or recycling during both the Christmas (December 26) and New Year’s (January 2) weeks. If you missed your recycling you can bring that to the Recycling Center on Thursday, December 29 or January 5 between 12.15-2.15 pm.  The Recycling Center will also be open for our regular first Saturday of the month drop off day on Saturday, January 7, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Christmas Tree Pick Up

G. Mello will begin to pick-up Christmas trees at the curb on Monday, January 2nd. Trees will be collected on various days (not necessarily your trash collection day). Please do not bag the trees, but please do remove bases, tinsel, and lights.

Trees put out by Monday, January 9th will be used for the Newbury Christmas Tree Bonfire at Spencer-Pierce Little Farm, which will be held on Saturday, January 14th from 3 to 8.30 p.m. That is our most cost-effective option, and it helps the Town of Newbury's Fire Department with its fundraiser!

After the bonfire, trees that are collected will be brought to the yard waste facility by Mello.   They will continue that service through the month of January.

Mattresses and textiles are no longer allowed in the trash

As of November 1, 2022, mattresses and textiles will no longer be allowed in the trash. New state rules require mattresses and textiles be kept out of the trash so they can be recycled or donated for reuse. In order to comply, the City of Newburyport offers two fee-based recycling options for mattresses.  To arrange for pick up by area nonprofit UTEC, either email lhanke@cityofnewbuyrport.com or call 978-465-4410 ext. 1 to arrange for a once monthly pick up or one may drop off a mattress at the recycling center when it is open.  For textiles, please use one of the textiles drop offs at the Bresnahan and School entrance or in the parking lot for the Nock/Molin Schools.

Recycling Center Update

The Recycling Center will be open on Saturday January 7, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is open on most Mondays and Thursdays, as well, from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. In the winter, you can check if it is open by calling the Health Department at 978-465-4410, ext. 1, to confirm that someone will be there.

Items you can drop off include white packing Styrofoam, anything with a cord or batteries, rechargeable batteries, cords, fluorescent bulbs, bicycles, appliances (large and small), tires, anything that is mostly metal (including grills, lawn mowers, patio tables/chairs, file cabinets, pots, pans), antifreeze, cardboard, motor oil, and cooking oil. You may not have heard that we now have a way to recycle rigid plastic, such as plastic trash cans, laundry baskets, and big plastic toys. Please note, there can be no metal parts on the rigid plastic.

Some items have fees for drop-off. They include TVs, monitors, printers, VCRs, DVD players, dehumidifiers, ACs, tires, microwaves, and large kitchen and laundry appliances.
